1. The system from the alternate site is in constant communication with the sytems from the primary site. In the event of an emergency or disaster, connectivity to the systems automatically fails over to the backup site and there is effectively no downtime noticed. This is an optimal solution or many organizations that have multiple data centeres or multiple locations that can be used as data centers.
