CRA 1-2: List of Crisis Scenarios

The types of crisis can be divided into 8 different categories. The first two threat categories [1] "Natural " and [2] "Technology" are usually referred to as "Threats" as this is addressed during the risk assessment when implementing the business continuity management program. It is discussed in Part 1: List of Threats .

The other six categories [3] to [8] are classified as Crisis Scenario.

[1] Natural and [2] Technology

These two types of crises which is better known as "Threats' is explained in Part 1: List of Threats :. Examples can be found in List of Threats

[3] Confrontation

A confrontation arises when employees fight amongst themselves, against management, or when individuals do not agree with each other and engage in non-productive acts. Some examples of Confrontation crises include:

  • Riots
  • Boycotts & strikes
  • Internal disputes
  • Ineffective communication & lack of coordination
  • Using ultimatums and being forced to accept their demands

[4] Malevolence

Occurs when some notorious employees take the help of criminal activities and extreme steps to fulfil their demands

  • Kidnapping of officials

[5] Organizational

Arises when management takes certain decisions knowing the harmful consequences of the same towards the stakeholders and external parties.

  • Examples of the crisis of organisational misdeeds can be further classified into the following three types. They are:
    • Skew management value
    • Deception
    • Management misconduct.

[6] Workplace Violence

Workplace Violence occurs when employees engage in acts of violence

[7] Rumours

Rumours are the spreading of false rumours about the organization that could damage the reputation of an organization. An example is fake news.

[8] Lack of Funds

Lack of Funds occurs when organizations fail to pay their creditors and other parties. In more extreme cases, it may lead to bankruptcy and liquidation crisis.

Instruction for BL-CM and BL-CC Participants

The section is for participants attending the BL-CM or CC Module 2 Session 1 facilitated workshop, this is the additional instruction to complete your Crisis Risk Assessment assignment.


Remember that you are expected to complete and submit the crisis scenarios (via document downloaded from eCampus) by keeping those crisis scenarios that have occurred in your country (C) and Organisation (O). 

  • On the same page, you are to complete and submit those crisis scenarios that arise in your organisation but may not have occurred in your country. 
  • For those in your country and not in your organisation, please strike out or delete them from the table. 
  • Note that some of the examples are very organisation sensitive, you may want to use another crisis scenarios example of another organisation for non-disclosure and confidentiality reasons.
  • Do not hesitate to add any new threats that are in the table provided.
  • It is highly recommended that one crisis scenario be input as part of your submission of this assignment. The reason is that it is easier to input the threats but for this crisis management/communication course, the course would like you to attempt a crisis scenario rather than a threat.
